The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an open source software package for photo editing, image composition and image authoring. It has a lot of common tools such as:

- Layers
- undo history
- tools usch as curves, histograms, sharpening, epecial effects to improve photos

There are a lot of plugins and extensions available to add functionality to Gimp. There is even an animation add-on that allows animations to be created. GIMP is supported by a large online community through forums, support sites and tutorials.

GIMP is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS-X.
