YouTube
There are some great video resources on YouTube that teachers would like to use in their classes. Unfortunately, there may be some videos which should not be seen by sensitive eyes and so are blocked from access within the DET WAN. Professional teachers are able to evaluate the suitability of any resource and so may download suitable videos for use in their classrooms. Some of the tools that will do this are listed below.

Youtube
Youtube actually has most videos already available as MPEG4 files. The details are mentioned in a blog entry here. Basically, you copy the URL mentioned on that page ("Get YouTube Video") to somewhere easy to get (bookmarks, toolbar, etc), and then when you are watching a video you want to download, click the bookmark. This will cause a download link to appear in the video information panel... Click it and save the file. Note that since these are MPEG4, Windows Media Player may not play them without extra codecs.
Windows
KeepTubeis tool to download, manage, and play video from YouTube. By using the unique tool, you can download multiple videos concurrently, create your favorite play list, loop play videos.
Mac OSX
MIRO There’s a great Podcast download manager/viewer called | Miro. It can manage downloads: ie. start-stop and load-balance simultaneous download. It also contains a viewer. It is open source software- with a .dmg installer for MAC OS X. It is also “limited space on disk” friendly. It can be configured to NOT touch the last 1Gb or 2Gb...etc. of your hard disk drive... You can then organise your downloads and copy them to a folder and put them on a CD-ROM for use in the classroom. Would be great for collecting Podcasts and managing them for later streaming across your Intranet. Miro also has a Guide, and you can easily set up libraries etc....
